Consumer Reports Recently Linked iPad to Risk of Heat-Related Injuries: Practice Good Safety Habits When Using This Popular Device

(PRWEB) April 11, 2012

Apple boasts that the new iPad features 10 hours of battery life, a feature that appeals to gamers, students and employees who plan on using the iPad for things other than brief, sporadic activities. This feature became less attractive on March 20, 2012, when Consumer Reports warned readers that temperatures as high as 116 degrees Fahrenheit might make it difficult for users to hold the iPad for extended periods of time. This bad news arrived after numerous studies linked the popular hand-held device to neck, back and shoulder injuries, but iPad users don't have to give up their favorite toy just yet. There are safe ways to use the iPad and decrease the risk of injury.

Heat-related injuries might not seem like something to be overly concerned about, but doctors report seeing an increase in burns related to laptops and other types of electronic devices. Most cases aren't fatal, but some require extensive treatment. It is important to note that direct contact with a hot device is not the only cause of heat-related injuries; some injuries occur when an individual leaves an over heated electronic device on a mattress or desk unattended. In late February 2012, The Burn Injury Resource Center reported that a 31-year-old man was airlifted to a burn treatment center after a laptop on his bed caught on fire, leaving him with severe burns that covered 60 percent of his body. He is one of many individuals affected by the cost and pain of a heat-related injury.

The Consumer Report of overly-hot temperatures for the new iPad are new, but you may already know that the iPad is not ergonomically friendly. Doctors treat more than 1.5 million notebook-related injuries each year, and ERGOLAB cautions that using the iPad without a cover or holder poses real risk of injury. Luckily, many of the tips for preventing heat-related injuries also apply to ergonomic injuries. For example:

????Take frequent breaks, at least once per hour, when using your iPad
????Stand up and stretch your arms, legs and neck during each break
????If your device feels like it is getting too hot, turn it off and allow the iPad to cool down
????Use a heat-resistant cover, such as LapWorks' 2Loop iPad Handle, to reduce the risk of burns
????Never leave the new iPad on a desk, mattress or carpet without a heat-resistant cover unless the device has been turned off and is cool to the touch
????Use a tool that promotes neutral hand positions, such as LapWorks' Handler iPad Strap and Desk Mount

It isn't easy to find a product that prevents everything from neck strain to heat-related injuries, so it is easy to see why LapWorks has developed a reputation as an innovative design and marketing company. We pride ourselves on being one of the first iPad accessory marketers to bring leading-edge products to our customers, says Jos? Calero, LapWorks founder and chief product architect.
